What’s the big deal with smoothies? Why are we so obsessed with them? Let us count the ways in which smoothies have changed our breakfast game…
Bacon, eggs, pancakes, bagels, cereal - these are all part of America’s traditional breakfast culture. We don’t think twice before hitting up that breakfast buffet or grabbing a huge bowl of cereal with your coffee. Have you ever noticed how you feel after eating these things, or even later in the day? Chances are your tummy is rumbly with gas and you probably want to take a big fat nap. How are these foods helping you live a vibrant life, full of energy and vigor? What you eat first thing in the morning is one of the most important decisions you’ll make for your health, and we vote smoothies as the best way to start your day. It was not easy to whittle the reasons down to three major ones, but we did it for you. And here they are:
1 - Pack in nutrients first thing in the morning.
“Nutrient deficiency leads to chronic overeating.” - Shawn Stevenson (Model Health Show)
Smoothies allow us to easily ingest a variety of nutrients, many of which we wouldn’t get otherwise during the day with regular food intake. When your body craves bad foods, you are most likely deficient in an important vitamin or mineral. Set yourself up for success by drinking your nutrient-dense smoothie so that you can avoid reaching for junk foods later in the day.
2 - Easy on your digestion.
Digestion is a very demanding task for your body. Your digestive tract has been in a state of rest and cleansing overnight. It’s a clean slate, like a bright white canvas just ready to host a beautiful painting. Don’t step all over it with muddy shoes. Give it those beauty foods so it can do its job properly. The blending of whole foods allows you to get a jumpstart on the digestive process. Those enzymes are already being broken down by the blending process so that your body has an easier time digesting what’s in your cup. Just like you don’t like to be woken up by a screaming siren in the mornings, your body systems don’t like being jolted into gear by having to digest heavy foods as a first meal.
Treat your smoothie as a meal. Sip it slowly and enjoy it. Chew it a little bit to activate your saliva production, which is one of the first steps in proper digestion and will also help to alleviate digestive problems like gas, bloating, & constipation.
“Saliva contains digestive enzymes, so the longer you chew, the more time these enzymes have to start breaking down your food, making digestion easier on your stomach and small intestine. One of these enzymes is lingual lipase, an enzyme that helps break down fats, for example. Saliva also helps to lubricate your food so it’s easier on your esophagus.” - Dr. Mercola
3 - Long-lasting energy and mental clarity.
Your first meal of the day will have a huge impact on your metabolism for the day. A well-rounded smoothie will have protein, good fats, carbohydrates, and micronutrients that support your metabolism. Smoothies are made from real, whole foods. Consumption of heavy, processed foods creates an imbalance in your body that can cause symptoms such as fatigue, mentally and physically. By starting your day with a light meal full of whole foods, your mind will be sharper, you’ll find it easier to focus, and you will experience sustained energy throughout the day.
