Coconut oil is all the rage these days, and that's because it's AWESOME! This oil is essential in our kitchens (and bathroom), and SO versatile. Read on to see our favorite ways to use coconut oil, and leave a comment with yours!
FACE WASH: I developed adult acne when I was in my mid twenties, it was the worst! Nothing would get rid of it, I even tried antibiotics, yuck! Finally, Schanen told me about coconut oil as face wash! Say What?! Basically, you take a tablespoon of coco oil (raw, unrefined is best) and lather it into your face, makeup and all. Then take a warm damp face cloth and rinse off residue. Once all make up and oil is cleaned off, you can dip a cotton ball in apple cider vinegar and use it as a toner. This was better than any expensive face wash I’ve tried. My acne cleared up within weeks and has never returned. It’s a miracle!
FAT BURNER: Did you know that coconut oil can flush out visceral fat? Which is that stubborn layer of belly fat that can be so hard to rid of. It sounds counter intuitive to eat fat when trying to lose weight, but because Coconut oil is a medium chain fatty acid (MCFA). MCFA’s are burned rapidly by the liver and used for energy instead of being stored as fat. They also help break down stubborn fat in the body. So basically coconut oil flushes out fat and increases energy expenditure, double win! Our favorite way to ingest the oil is by adding a tablespoon to our coffee in the morning. Blend it up with some vanilla extract and you’ll have a frothy cappuccino! PLUS, the coco oil combats the acidity in the coffee, making it more alkalizing and easier on the tummy. TRIPLE win!
MOISTURIZER: We use doterra essential oils for just about everything. And guess what the base for all our homemade products are? You guessed it, COCO OIL! HOORAH Our favorite after shower body moisturizer combines ½ cup coconut oil, ½ cup raw shea butter, 10 drops of lavender, 10 drops of frankincense, and 5 drops of wild orange. Making your own beauty products is not only a sure way to avoid sneaky toxic chemicals, but it will also deliver the best product at the cheapest cost.
HEALTHY KITCHEN OIL: Coconut oil can be used to cook most anything at a medium temperature. (the smoke point is 350 degrees) We use it in baking, sauteeing vegetables and baking casseroles. Even though it tastes great when heated, our favorite way to consume it is in it’s raw form. It’s our go to oil when making yummy salad dressings or marinades.
HOMEMADE CHOCOLATES: Did you know that you can make your own chocolate with three ingredients, two of them being superfoods! Say what?! Basically all you need is coconut oil, raw cacao and your favorite sweetener. For a bomb, healthy superfood chocolate bar; heat ⅔ cup coconut oil at low heat, once it’s melted stir in ⅔ cup of raw cacao powder and ⅓ cup of favorite sweetener (maple, honey, agave). For added flavor add pinch of sea salt, tsp of vanilla extract or our favorite, 2 drops of peppermint oil. Once blended pour over a parchment covered cookie sheet and freeze. Once hardened (takes an hour or so), break up into pieces and enjoy. Store chocolate in fridge. We love making this delicious homemade chocolate. Bring it to parties and impress guests with your homemade goodness. And get creative, add chopped nuts, cranberries, pretzels or whatever you normally like in your chocolate. Once you perfect to your liking, we promise you’ll never buy another chocolate bar.
